Mapfolks ("we", "our", or "us") respects your privacy and is designed from the ground up to minimize the collection and exposure of personal data. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have.
1. What Mapfolks Is (and Is Not)
Mapfolks lets you share general location context (country, region, or city) with people you explicitly choose.
- We do not track precise GPS coordinates by default
- We do not record movement history or routes
- We do not sell or monetize personal data
- We do not create public profiles
Your location is visible only to approved connections.
2. Information We Collect
2.1 Account Information
When you create an account, we may collect:
- Email address
- Display name
- Authentication provider identifier (e.g. Google)
Auth is handled by Supabase.
2.2 Location Information (Coarse Only)
Depending on your settings, we may store:
- Country
- Region / state
- City
This information:
- Is selected manually or derived approximately (e.g. IP-based)
- Is never shared as precise latitude/longitude
- Can be removed on demand
2.3 Connection Data
To enable sharing, we store:
- Approved connections (friends, teammates)
- Invitation status (email or invite link)
2.4 Technical Data
For security and reliability, we may collect:
- IP address
- Geolocation (if a permission is given)
- Error logs and performance metrics
This data is not used for advertising.
3. How We Use Your Data
We use your information only to:
- Provide the core Mapfolks functionality
- Show your location to people you approve
- Send essential service emails (sign-in links, invitations)
- Maintain security and prevent abuse
- Improve stability and usability
We do not use your data for profiling or targeted advertising.
4. How Location Sharing Works
- Location visibility is opt-in
- You control who sees what
- Removing a connection instantly revokes access
- You can change your location at any time
There is no background tracking.
5. Data Sharing
We do not sell your data.
We may share limited data only with:
- Infrastructure providers required to run the service (e.g. authentication, email delivery, maps)
- Authorities, only if legally required
All providers are selected with privacy and security in mind.
6. Data Retention
- Account and location data is stored while your account is active
- When your account is deleted, your data is permanently removed within a reasonable time
7. Your Rights
Depending on your location, you may have the right to:
- Access your personal data
- Correct inaccurate data
- Delete your account and associated data
8. Cookies and Tracking
Mapfolks uses:
- Essential cookies for authentication and session management
We do not use:
- Third-party advertising cookies
- Cross-site tracking pixels
9. Children's Privacy
Mapfolks is not intended for children under 16.
We do not knowingly collect data from children.
10. International Users
Your data may be processed in different countries depending on infrastructure providers.
We take reasonable measures to protect data regardless of location.
11. Changes to This Policy

- The "Last updated" date will be revised
